The beloved side-scrolling arcade game, Flappy Bird, is now available once again for Android users after a 12-year hiatus. Gamers can now download it for free from the Epic Games Store, marking a significant return of the game that once captivated millions around the world.
In 2025, both Android and iOS users can expect a ‘revamped’ version of Flappy Bird, according to the official website and store listing. This latest iteration for Android includes new characters, challenges, and worlds, ensuring a fresh yet familiar experience for players.
Originally released in 2013 by Vietnamese indie developer Dong Nguyen, Flappy Bird quickly became a sensation thanks to its simple yet addictive gameplay and graphics reminiscent of classic Mario games. The game amassed over 50 million downloads during its peak. However, its success was short-lived; Nguyen pulled the game from app stores in February 2014, citing that it had “ruined his life” despite reportedly earning $50,000 a day.
In 2024, Flappy Bird faced trademark issues when Nguyen lost rights to Gametech Holdings, which led to an unofficial reboot titled “The Flappy Bird Foundation.” This version was criticized for incorporating cryptocurrency, a move that was poorly received by fans.
Nguyen has officially distanced himself from the unofficial reboot, making it clear in a message on X that he has “nothing to do with their game,” and emphasizing that he hasn’t sold any rights or endorsed any cryptocurrency involvement.
In its latest web2-only format, players can enjoy Classic and Mission modes, navigating Flappy through pipes and obstacles across new worlds. The updated game requires Android 6.0 or higher and has a download size of approximately 129 MB. An iOS version is currently in development, with plans for additional platforms yet to be announced.
