While we were already aware that the iOS 26 update would introduce live translation capabilities to AirPods, recent reports suggest a plethora of additional features. The latest iOS 26 is rumored to bring an array of enhancements to AirPods, including sleep detection and new camera control functionalities.
Anticipated AirPods Features with iOS 26
With the upcoming iOS 26 and macOS 26 releases, Apple may introduce new head movement gestures, such as a gesture to adjust the volume of Speech Awareness. Currently, users can accept calls or respond to notifications by nodding their head up and down. Conversely, shaking the head left and right allows users to reject calls or dismiss notifications. To leverage the head gesture response feature, both Announce Calls and Sound Notifications must be activated.
The iOS 26 update will bring a significant convenience for users who enjoy listening to music on their headphones while falling asleep. With this update, AirPods will intelligently pause audio playback when the user falls asleep, potentially utilizing sleep data from the Apple Watch, as AirPods themselves lack sleep detection capabilities.
Moreover, reports suggest that with iOS 26, users might be able to activate the iPhone’s camera by simply tapping the tip of their AirPods. While a timer feature would enhance this functionality, tapping the ear to take photos could result in some interesting images.
The update is also expected to introduce a new microphone mode for AirPods, akin to the Audio Mix feature on the iPhone. This will allow users to choose from various audio recording options, such as studio and cinematic settings. It’s currently unclear whether these features will be available across all AirPods models or if certain functionalities will be exclusive to the AirPods Pro.
