The eagerly anticipated Borderlands 4 has unveiled new gameplay details during the recent State of Play live stream. From unique weapon manufacturers to innovative gameplay mechanics and mission insights, here’s what fans can look forward to.
Fans can mark their calendars for September 12, 2025, as this is when the next installment in the Borderlands saga will be available. Originally slated for a later release on September 23, 2025, the date has been moved up, much to the delight of eager players. This announcement was made alongside a promise of an in-depth look at the game during the State of Play broadcast.
In a compelling twenty-minute video, new gameplay aspects were showcased. The upcoming game is set to revamp the loot drop rates and refine weapon functionalities, aiming to rekindle the joy of achieving specific in-game goals.
Players will have access to weapons from eight different manufacturers, including three newcomers: Daedalus, Order, and Ripper. Each manufacturer brings something unique to the table. Jakobs will offer weapons ideal for critical hits, Maliwan will focus on elemental attributes, and Vladof will prioritize ammunition capacity over precision. Tediore will enhance reload efficiency, Torgue will specialize in explosives, Order will deliver powerful strikes, Ripper will provide fully automatic firearms, and Daedalus will allow for easy use with multiple ammo types.
A novel Licensed Parts system will allow these manufacturers’ features to intersect, enabling multiple specializations on a single weapon. For instance, a Vladof weapon might be equipped with Torgue’s explosive rounds.
Besides weapons, three new equipment categories will be introduced: Ordnance, which covers heavy weapons and grenades; Enhancements, replacing Artifacts and boosting certain weapon attributes; and Repkits, which aid in healing and reducing cooldowns.
The State of Play stream also provided a first look at two of the four playable Vault Hunters, Rafa and Vex, as well as the intriguing planet Kairos, a once-hidden world now revealed due to the events of Borderlands 3.
A showcased mission unfolds in an area called Terminus Range, illustrating gameplay elements like hovering, dashing, double-jumping, and the use of grappling hooks. A new vehicle, the Digirunner, was also introduced alongside dynamic weather conditions and various map events like hangars. These events will reveal themselves as players explore, adding to the map and providing screen indicators for tracking.
Currently in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series, Borderlands 4 promises to deliver a captivating experience on September 12, 2025. For a comprehensive look, fans can view the State of Play deep dive video and the latest gameplay trailer.
