Since the dawn of 2024, the number of Android apps has plummeted from 3.4 million to approximately 1.8 million, according to a recent report. In contrast, Apple’s App Store has experienced a subtle increase, with its app count rising from 1.6 million to 1.64 million. What factors have led to this drastic 47% reduction in the Android app marketplace in such a short span?
Google has initiated the removal of low-quality apps from its platform. Historically, the Play Store was more lenient, allowing a wide array of applications. However, a significant policy shift occurred in July 2024. Google implemented stricter guidelines, systematically purging apps that were either non-functional or offered negligible user benefits. Currently, for any app to be listed on the Google Play Store, it must provide genuine utility to the users.
Over 158,000 developer accounts have been terminated! Additionally, more than 2 million apps were blocked pre-publication. Enhanced human review processes, improved testing for new developers, and AI-driven threat detection are now in place. This year, new European regulations require developers to disclose their name and address in app listings. Although Google has not explicitly cited this regulation as a reason, it may have influenced some developers to retract their apps.
Despite the reduction in the overall number of apps, there has been a 7% rise in newly published applications, with over 10,000 fresh apps added since the start of 2025. The Google Play Store is poised to offer a more streamlined and secure selection of applications.
