Introduction to CATL’s Tener Stack

China-based Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), known as the leading global battery supplier, has unveiled its most advanced grid-scale energy storage solution to date at the Smarter E event in Munich, Germany. This cutting-edge system, named the Tener Stack, boasts a remarkable 9 megawatt-hour (MWh) capacity. It is designed to seamlessly integrate with both centralized and string inverter architectures, showcasing its versatility for a broad spectrum of applications.

Introduction to CATL's Tener Stack

Key Features of Tener Stack

High Capacity, Enhanced Security, and Portability

Hank Zhao, the Chief Technology Officer of CATL Europe Energy Storage Systems, emphasized that the Tener Stack was engineered not only to deliver significant capacity but also to ensure ease of transport and installation. These units, each weighing under 36 tons, conform to transportation standards in 99 percent of countries globally, eliminating the necessity for specialized transport equipment.

Key Features of Tener Stack

Technological Advancements

Building on the success of the earlier Tener series, this novel model incorporates state-of-the-art 565 Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, which were featured in the 6.25 MWh variant launched in 2024. The latest iteration offers a 45 percent improvement in volume efficiency and a 50 percent increase in energy density over its predecessor, elevating its capacity to 9 MWh. This capacity is sufficient to charge 150 electric vehicles or supply power to an average German household for six years.

Enhanced Safety Features

The Tener Stack also excels in safety enhancements: fire detection sensitivity is improved by 40 percent, response time for fire suppression is expedited by 35 percent, the threshold for flammable gas alarms is reduced by 10 percent, and fire resistance is extended to up to 2 hours.

Economic Benefits and Future Potential

CATL asserts that opting for the 9 MWh system over the previous 6 MWh model in large-scale projects can lead to cost savings of up to 20 percent. Zhao further indicates that the 9 MWh capacity is not the ceiling, with plans to potentially develop systems with even greater capacities.
