About a year ago, the US government announced a ban on TikTok, with the prohibition initially set to commence on January 19, 2025. However, with Donald Trump assuming the presidency earlier this year, ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, was granted an extension. During this period, TikTok became a topic of discussion in US-China negotiations. Recently, President Trump stated that TikTok would soon be acquired by an American company. While anticipation grew over which company would take ownership, ByteDance made a surprising move.
Instead of transferring TikTok entirely to a US entity, ByteDance is developing a new application specifically for US users. Although specific details about this new app remain undisclosed, it is widely speculated that this will be the version transferred to the American company. Post-transfer, this US-centric version of TikTok will be launched, while the existing TikTok will be inaccessible in the US. However, the rest of the world will continue enjoying TikTok under ByteDance’s management, unless similar prohibitions are enacted by other governments.
From the outset, there were speculations that ByteDance would not fully relinquish TikTok to the US. As the ban’s implementation loomed, the company’s strategic options dwindled. Yet, as US-China trade relations improved, ByteDance adopted a more cooperative stance, paving the way for this innovative solution. Through this move, ByteDance not only secures substantial revenue from the US sale but also maintains its global operations unchanged.
