Apple is gearing up to introduce a groundbreaking change in the memory infrastructure of its upcoming iPhone 18 and iPhone 18 Pro models. The tech giant plans to adopt a six-channel RAM architecture for the new iPhone series, which is slated for release in 2025.
This strategic shift is expected to deliver substantial improvements in AI processing, mobile gaming, and multitasking performance. Traditionally, six-channel memory designs have been utilized primarily in high-bandwidth server systems.
The new architecture enhances data flow between the DRAM and the memory controller, offering a significant performance boost even with the existing LPDDR5X technology. By integrating this advanced architecture into its mobile devices, Apple aims to make the iPhone 18 series more powerful, especially for applications that demand intensive background processing.
Reportedly, the entire iPhone 18 lineup will be equipped with 12 GB of RAM. This is noteworthy as the iPhone 17 series faced supply constraints, limiting this capacity to only three models. However, the primary performance enhancement is anticipated to stem from the architectural change rather than the increased memory capacity.
Interestingly, Apple has decided not to transition to the more current LPDDR6 memory standard with this new architecture, opting instead to continue with the established LPDDR5X technology. This decision might pose a disadvantage when compared to Android chipsets like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Elite, which will feature LPDDR6 support.
