Apple has taken the wraps off its latest smartwatch operating system at WWDC 2025, introducing watchOS 26. In a surprising twist, Apple has skipped several version numbers, aligning with the year-based versioning system across its ecosystem. This strategic decision ensures that iOS, macOS, iPadOS, tvOS, visionOS, and watchOS are all synchronized with the same version number, simplifying updates and ensuring users always know their device’s software status.
Among the standout features of watchOS 26 is a new design language called Liquid Glass. This innovative aesthetic introduces a transparent, dynamic look that enhances app interactions, creating a more engaging user experience. The Smart Stack, Control Center, Notifications, and the Photos watch face are all enhanced with this stunning visual update, providing an immersive and fluid experience. The numbers on the Photos watch face, now styled with Liquid Glass, pop with vibrance and clarity.
With watchOS 26, Apple Intelligence takes personalized fitness to unprecedented levels. The new Workout Buddy feature analyzes user data such as heart rate, pace, distance, and Activity rings to deliver real-time motivational feedback. Whether you’re starting a run or in the middle of a workout, Workout Buddy provides encouragement with phrases like “You’ve run 6 miles so far this week, today’s run will take you beyond.” This personalized voice guidance is crafted using AI-generated voices, drawing from the audio expertise of Fitness+ trainers. Initially, Workout Buddy supports running, walking, cycling, HIIT, and strength training, and works seamlessly with Bluetooth headphones and Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhones.
The Workout app has received a significant overhaul in watchOS 26, featuring corner shortcuts for easy workout customization. Users can automatically start music or podcast playlists tailored to their activities, with Apple Music intelligently suggesting playlists based on exercise type and personal preferences. The Smart Stack feature, now finely tuned with user habits, sensor data, and location information, offers precise recommendations. For instance, a user visiting a pilates studio every Wednesday will see pilates suggestions at the appropriate time. These recommendations are beautifully integrated with Liquid Glass aesthetics, enriching the overall visual experience.
Apple Watch now supports live translation, automatically translating incoming messages into the user’s preferred language. Replies can also be translated and sent instantly, bridging language gaps effortlessly. Contextual smart action suggestions, such as “Check In” or Apple Cash payments, enhance messaging convenience. Additionally, personalized backgrounds, poll responses, and improved quick replies elevate the overall messaging experience. Users can even control notifications, calls, and alarms with a simple wrist gesture, perfect for one-handed convenience.
Developers can explore these innovations starting today as part of the Apple Developer Program. A public beta will follow next month through the Apple Beta Software Program, with the stable release arriving in the fall. Compatible Devices: watchOS 26 will be a free software update for Apple Watch Series 6 and later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), and all Apple Watch Ultra models, when paired with iPhone 11 and later running iOS 26. Features powered by Apple Intelligence will be exclusive to devices such as the iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
