The ongoing dispute between Apple and Epic Games has once again resurfaced, reigniting debates about competition, control, and fairness in digital marketplaces. After years of courtroom clashes, the conflict has now shifted focus to Australia, where Epic Games is challenging Apple’s strict regulations on app distribution and payment systems.

In the initial stages of the case, Epic accused Apple of monopolistic practices, claiming that the company’s closed ecosystem limits innovation and stifles competition. Although a federal court ruling in August 2025 partially favored Epic—acknowledging that Apple’s ban on sideloading and alternative payment methods breached competition laws—it also confirmed Apple’s right to enforce certain measures for user security.

Apple’s Position and Counterclaims

Apple has pushed back strongly, arguing that Epic’s demands go far beyond what the court mandated. The company asserts that Epic is attempting to “use the platform for free” while disregarding the infrastructure and security Apple provides. According to Apple’s official statement, the current security framework is designed to safeguard users, and circumventing these protections could lead to vulnerabilities that endanger customer data and trust.

Upcoming Hearings and Potential Outcomes

Following the latest hearing on October 17, both sides are gearing up for another critical stage. A preliminary session is scheduled for December, while the final and conclusive hearing will take place in March 2026. During this period, Apple will have the opportunity to comment on Epic’s proposed policy changes and clarify its stance on regulatory adjustments.

Should Epic prevail, the outcome could compel Apple to permit both sideloading and external payment methods on iOS devices for the first time in the region. Epic has also hinted that a favorable decision would bring Fortnite back to iPhones across Australia. Nevertheless, Apple contends that such a move could seriously compromise user security and the integrity of its ecosystem.
