Public support for President Donald Trump has experienced a noticeable decline, with his approval rating dropping from 47 percent in February to 40 percent by April. Despite this reduction, Trump continues to maintain a significant base of support across the United States. However, recent developments, including the ongoing trade conflict, are causing widespread public concern and skepticism toward the administration’s key policy decisions.
Disapproval of Key Policies
A substantial 59 percent of Americans disapprove of the administration’s tariff increases, while 55 percent oppose the proposed budget cuts to federal agencies. In both scenarios, the majority express apprehension about the potential negative impacts of these measures.
President Trump’s extensive use of executive powers has sparked significant public debate. A majority, 51 percent, of adult Americans believe that Trump is enacting too many policies through executive orders, thereby diminishing the democratic process. Meanwhile, 27 percent consider the current level of executive action appropriate, and a mere 5 percent think it should be expanded.
The survey followed Trump’s announcement of new tariffs on April 2, targeting nearly all trading partners, which led to market volatility. Although tariffs were suspended for most countries on April 9, rates on Chinese goods were increased. Conducted between April 7-13, the survey revealed that public sentiment regarding economic and trade policies remained relatively unchanged despite these developments.
