The Importance of Sleep Posture on Health

In a study conducted in the UK with support from Benenden Health, it was revealed that a fifth of the participants did not recognize the impact of their sleeping habits on their overall health. However, experts caution that incorrect sleeping positions can lead to significant issues affecting the spine, joints, and nervous system.

Dr. Cheryl Lythgoe from Benenden Health highlights that the optimal sleeping position is on one’s side, particularly beneficial for individuals who snore or suffer from sleep apnea. For those battling heartburn or digestive issues, resting on the left side emerges as the healthiest choice.

Health Risks Associated with Sleeping Face Down

Dr. Lythgoe warns against sleeping on the stomach, as it can exert excessive pressure on the spine, neck, and lower back, potentially causing chronic pain and breathing difficulties. Similarly, adopting a tightly curled fetal position can disrupt the spine’s natural alignment, adversely affecting sleep quality.

Jordan Dehara, chief physiotherapist, underscores the significance of using pillows to alleviate bodily pressure during sleep. Placing a pillow between the legs while in the fetal position or under the knees when lying on the back can help reduce strain on the lower back and hips. Moreover, selecting the right pillow is crucial for maintaining neck and spine health.

The study disclosed that 40 percent of respondents wake up experiencing aches, pains, and stiffness. Surprisingly, 70 percent of those surveyed had never sought treatment or solutions for these issues.
