In a recent broadcast by Samaa TV in Pakistan, the country’s official, Asif, addressed the rising tensions with India following an attack in Jammu Kashmir. Asif emphasized that Pakistan remains ‘prepared for any scenario’ and declared, ‘If our security is threatened, we will respond with all our strength.’
Asif issued a stern warning to India regarding the Indus Waters Treaty, urging India to refrain from taking measures that would impede the flow of water to Pakistan. He asserted, ‘If India constructs any structure to cut our water, it will be destroyed. Water is our red line. Future conflicts will be fought over water.’
He conveyed that while any potential conflict might initially be restricted to the Line of Control (LoC) between Pakistan and India, he cautioned, ‘if it starts, it cannot be controlled.’
Asif criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies, comparing them to those of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Asif warned, ‘If Modi takes irresponsible steps, Pakistan will respond in a way that history will remember.’
Previously, on May 4, Asif had cautioned that any attempt by India to construct a structure on the Indus River, violating the suspended treaty, would be met with a ‘response.’
On April 22, a tragic incident occurred where gunmen opened fire on tourists in the Pahalgam region of Indian-administered Jammu Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of 26 people and injuring many others.
India accused Pakistan of harboring the attackers and consequently suspended the Indus Waters Treaty. It also demanded that Pakistani undersecretaries in New Delhi leave the country within a week, suspended visa services for Pakistani citizens, and revoked all previously issued visas.
In response, Pakistan denied the allegations, reduced the number of Indian diplomatic personnel in Islamabad, and declared any interference with the rivers beyond the treaty as an ‘act of war.’ Additionally, Pakistan suspended all trade with India and closed its airspace.
