The U.S. Department of Education has announced a comprehensive review of Harvard University’s $255 million contract with the federal government, which is part of a broader effort to scrutinize donations exceeding $8.7 billion. This initiative aims to ensure compliance with civil rights laws, particularly focusing on eradicating antisemitic harassment across American college campuses.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, stating, “Harvard’s inability to safeguard students from antisemitic discrimination has significantly tarnished its standing. Instead of fostering an environment of free inquiry, it has allowed divisive ideologies to flourish. Harvard now has the opportunity to rectify these issues and reaffirm its commitment to academic excellence and the pursuit of truth, ensuring that all students feel secure on campus.”
This investigation follows Columbia University’s recent decision to align with directives from President Donald Trump’s administration to combat antisemitism. On March 14, Columbia University declared its compliance with these federal demands to secure its $400 million funding. The university’s official statement detailed plans to revise its definition of antisemitism and expand the staff at the Institute of Israel and Jewish Studies, reflecting a commitment to addressing and mitigating antisemitic sentiments on campus.
