This innovative technology has achieved the remarkable feat of generating an entirely new color perception by directly stimulating specific cone cells in the retina using laser light.

Understanding Human Color Perception

The human visual system primarily relies on three types of cone cells in the retina, each sensitive to different wavelengths corresponding to red, green, and blue. Under normal circumstances, we perceive colors through the combined stimulation of these cones, rather than their individual activation. However, the new methodology pioneered by the research team focuses on exclusively targeting the green-sensitive cones, thereby inducing a novel color signal in the brain that participants had never encountered before.
Participant Experiences and Observations

In the experimental phase, the researchers directed laser light into the eyes of three participants. These individuals reported an inability to match the newly perceived color with any known color combination. To describe this unique perception, participants had to incorporate intense white light into their descriptions.
The Discovery of ‘Olo’
The research team has aptly named this unprecedented color experience ‘olo’. During the experiment, participants observed previously unseen color transitions and intricate patterns, particularly at the peripheral visual fields of their eyes. These revelations offer a fresh perspective on the boundaries of human color perception and hold potential implications for addressing visual conditions like color blindness.
Implications and Future Research
The ‘Oz’ prototype represents a pioneering step in developing an experimental platform designed to manipulate and explore the visual system at a cellular level. This advancement may pave the way for further understanding and potentially revolutionizing the treatment of various visual impairments.
