China’s Groundbreaking Step into Deep Sea Drilling

China is on the brink of a major advancement in deep sea drilling, as it plans to deploy its specially developed ship, Meng Xiang, on an ambitious mission to drill into the Earth’s crust. This pioneering venture not only heralds a new era in geological exploration but also plays a pivotal role in enhancing China’s global maritime and energy strategy.

China's Groundbreaking Step into Deep Sea Drilling

Exploring Earth’s Depths with Meng Xiang

Historically, one of the deepest drills, the Soviet Union’s Kola Super Deep Borehole, reached a depth of 12 kilometers, yet it couldn’t fully penetrate the Earth’s crust. China’s latest project sets its sights on studying the elusive boundary between the crust and the mantle, known as the Mohorovičić discontinuity (Moho). Until now, our understanding of this boundary has been limited to seismic data and volcanic mineral studies.

Exploring Earth's Depths with Meng Xiang

China’s Deep Ocean Drilling Program aims to transcend these limitations by retrieving direct samples to analyze geological structures. The Meng Xiang is the first domestically developed deep-sea drillship designated for this purpose. After its commissioning in November 2024, the ship is set to commence operations in the South China Sea this year, following comprehensive hardware tests, with an operational timeline extending until 2035.

Scientific and Resource Exploration

Aside from scientific exploration, the Meng Xiang is engineered for energy resource exploration. Its versatile design facilitates the search for deep-sea oil, natural gas, and methane hydrate reserves. Moreover, it will extract deep ocean geological cores, aiding critical research on plate tectonics, undersea earthquakes, and climate change.
