In a groundbreaking moment for electric mobility, BYD’s luxury sub-brand Yangwang has made global headlines after its U9 hypercar conquered Germany’s legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife. The U9, a symbol of China’s high-performance engineering, became the fastest mass-produced electric vehicle to ever complete the demanding circuit.
The exclusive version, named Yangwang U9 Xtreme, stormed through the 20.8-kilometer track with a blistering time of 6 minutes and 59.157 seconds. With this performance, the car shattered the seven-minute mark, a milestone previously thought unreachable by most electric models.
Piloted by German driver Moritz Kranz, the U9 officially dethroned the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, which had clocked a time of 7:04.957. The new record improved upon Xiaomi’s achievement by a commanding five seconds, underlining Yangwang’s growing dominance in the EV supercar arena.
Despite this remarkable feat, enthusiasts continue to debate whether the U9 truly qualifies as a mass-produced model. After all, production is limited to just 30 units, each equipped with four electric motors generating a total output of nearly 3,000 horsepower. The hypercar also reached an astounding top speed of 496 km/h in previous testing, strengthening its claim as one of the world’s most advanced electric vehicles.
