Apple has embarked on a groundbreaking journey with its minimalist and functional design ethos. Unveiled during WWDC 2025, the Liquid Glass design language is being launched simultaneously across iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26. Described as “the most comprehensive software design update ever,” this initiative aims to enhance Apple’s synergy between hardware and software.
Introducing Liquid Glass
Alan Dye from Apple presented Liquid Glass at WWDC 2025 by stating, “This is our most comprehensive design update yet.” This new design approach brings the interplay of light and reflections reminiscent of its namesake material to digital interfaces. From iOS 26’s lock screen and in-app menus to the sidebars and toolbars of macOS Tahoe, a glass-like sheen and transparency now permeate every aspect.
Inspired by visionOS, Liquid Glass dynamically adjusts to both light and dark environments. It reflects and refracts light akin to actual glass and shifts its hues based on surrounding content. The design adapts to ambient lighting conditions and responds to user gestures in real-time. Each interface component, ranging from buttons and tab bars to widgets and home screen icons, is enriched by this vibrant, interactive framework.
Liquid Glass not only offers visual allure but also harmonizes with the physical form of Apple’s devices. The reshaped controls and navigation structures suit the modern round-cornered designs, facilitating a seamless transition between app windows, content, and the device’s physical form. Controls now serve as an independent layer atop applications, reshaping per the user’s requirements and engaging with content fluidly. In iOS 26, for instance, when users scroll, the tab bar contracts to enhance focus, and when swiped upwards, it fluidly expands to improve visibility.
Integration Across Apple Ecosystem
This design language transcends mere aesthetics, redefining interface interactions. Fundamental components like buttons, text fields, media controls, and tab bars have been redesigned to embody the Liquid Glass aesthetic. Key applications including Photos, Safari, FaceTime, Apple Music, Apple News, and Apple Podcasts have been updated to align with Liquid Glass. macOS Tahoe 26’s fully transparent menu bar aims to offer a more expansive experience, especially beneficial for users with widescreen displays. Whether opting for light or dark themes, tinted glass shades, and a transparent menu bar create a more expansive and immersive Mac screen experience.
Empowering Developers with New APIs
Apple has unveiled new sets of APIs to expedite developers’ transition to this innovative design language. By providing new APIs for those utilizing SwiftUI, UIKit, and AppKit, Apple is facilitating a smoother adaptation to Liquid Glass.
